Benefits of having a blog

A blog is one of the best ways to keep your website up to date and provide your customers with new and exciting content, while generating clickable content for other platforms at the same time.

A website that doesn’t move is a stale website. A website with a blog is constantly evolving. It continually updates with new information and content, which aside from the huge SEO benefits, also gives your clients and prospective customers new reasons to keep visiting.

Here are some of the biggest and best reasons for having a blog on your website:

1: Instant Marketing, Credibility and Publicity

When you create a blog post, you should be writing either about yourself, your company, what you do, or something you specialise in. After all, its focus is to showcase YOU. Who you are, what you are, and how knowledgeable you are at what you do. As people read your blog, they begin to learn about your work, your life and/or your interest (depending on your business/ website purpose).

You are to not only sell yourself and show your credibility in your field, but to impart something different to your readers. Whether that be knowledge or entertainment, as long as they get something in return for the 5/10/15 minutes they spend reading, you will have left your mark on them.

2: Increases Search Engine Optimistaion

Compared to a static website, one which includes a blog is much friendlier to search engines because of the fresh content it offers. Google gives precedence to sites that continually update content. A blog is a fantastic way to keep your site fresh. The updated content is great for search engines’ robots, and it’s a natural way to keep customers coming back to your site.  Search engines want content that’s helpful for users.

Your website will only have so much content on it, but with a blog, you can write about what you feel is most helpful for your audience, no matter if it fits into a sitemap or not. When you blog, every post is indexed in search engines as a single page. Having more pages doesn’t necessarily correlate with a better ranking, but it does keep Google’s robots on your site longer.

3: Improves your writing

The more you write, the better you will become at it. FACT! Most bloggers write on a regular basis and therefore analyse and proofread their writing constantly.

However, being a good writer is not a prerequisite for a successful blog, so if you don’t have an English degree, don’t worry! Many very high profile bloggers are self-proclaimed terrible writers, and part of their success could be attributed to their message of “If I can do it, so can you”.

4: Creates Sharable Content

It’s difficult to maintain an active social media presence without access to unique, high-quality content. Sharing other people’s content on social media is great, but at some point you want to be directing those leads to your own site. As you share your blog posts on social media, you increase traffic to your own business website. Your blog posts give you a unique opportunity to share your voice and personality, building up trust and increasing your brand’s credibility.

Having high-quality inbound links to your site is one of the three pillars of SEO. However, without a blog it can be extremely difficult to attract quality links to your business website. When you add new content that serves as a resource for not only your own social media sites, but also other bloggers and media, you start to naturally accumulate inbound links.

Overall, the two main things I would say before you get started blogging is:

Make a promise to yourself that you are going to write a post at least once a week or once a fortnight. An empty blog section, with loads of gaps not only looks unprofessional, but it may make people think you have nothing to say, so you can’t be that much of an expert, or that you don’t care. It’s better to have no blog section at all, than 1 with two posts that hasn’t been updated in 6 months.

Do not make your blog a responsibility and burden, if you don’t enjoy it, you will soon give up. Find things to help you keep enthusiastic about it, and write about topics you are genuinely interested in. Blogging should be a hobby you enjoy. Collaborate with your friends or colleagues, ask your clients for ideas, search other blogs for topics, read books, be creative!

Blogging on your company’s website is one of the best ways to differentiate yourself from your competition. By providing your own unique thoughts and insights, you will naturally grow your search traffic, customer trust and ultimately, sales.
